Joule-Thomson process is extremely useful and economical for attaining low temperature. The process can be categorized as
General KnowledgePhysics
- Aisobaric process
- Bisoenthalpic process
- Cadiabatic process
- Disochoric process
Explanation
In the Joule–Thomson (throttling) process, a gas expands through a porous plug or valve with no heat exchange with the surroundings and no shaft work done. Under these conditions the enthalpy of the gas remains constant, so the process is isoenthalpic. The resulting temperature change — cooling for most gases below their inversion temperature — is exploited in refrigeration and gas liquefaction. The process is therefore isoenthalpic.
