- APresident on the advice of the Union Cabinet
- BChief Justice of the Supreme Court
- CPresident of India after an address in both Houses of Parliament
- DPresident on the advice of Chief Justice of India
Explanation
Under Article 148, the Comptroller and Auditor-General can be removed from office only in the manner a Supreme Court judge is removed: by the President after an address passed by both Houses of Parliament with a special majority. Removal on the Cabinet's advice or by the Chief Justice is not provided for. This security of tenure protects the CAG's independence. Hence removal is only by the President after an address in both Houses of Parliament.
