Separatism refers to the ideology of creating a separate state or nation by the people due to some underlying factors such as regional sentiments and cultural assertiveness. Regional sentiments may be generated due to: Positive Factors - Similarity in culture among people - Underlying history that led to feeling of close-ties. Eg Munda rebellion - Good socio-economic indicators and governance structure. Negative Factors - Development deficit as compared to other regions. - Eg Hill regions of Mizoram or Jharkhand region of earlier Bihar - [illegible] among people belonging to different culture. Eg Manipur-Kuki and Haitei people - Violence and loss of minorities as compared to others - Differences in cultural value/practices than the majority. Eg Nagas

The regional sentiments and cultural assertiveness can lead to issues of separatism in following ways: i Differences in regional culture and inability to identify with the people of the country. Eg Demand of greater Nagalinm by the Nagas. ii Negative sentiments for the majority due to discrimination and developed deficit leading to separatist demands. Eg Jharkhand movement However, there does not always lead to separatist issues, rather: i Help in regional development by raising the specific issues. ii Creation of diversity that help in resolution of challenges in better way. iii Cultural diversity leading to regional tourism boosting the economy. Eg Sikkim state. Thus, the regional sentiments does not always lead to separatist demands and are rather one of the factors.

Improving development, correcting the historical injustice and integration of cultures will help in reducing the issues of separatism.
