How does the Eastern coast of India differ in its geographical features from the western coast?
Main Body
The coastal regions of India vary greatly in terms of biodiversity and landform. India has coastline of over 7500 kms. Differences in Geographical features: i Continuous mountain range along the west coast – western ghats whereas non-continuous range of mountain along the east coast – eastern ghats.
ii Height of western ghats is taller than eastern ghats. iii Greater number of rivers emerge from western ghats such as Godavari, Krishna and Kaveri. iv Receives rainfall during the summer monsoon in western ghats whereas the East coast receives rainfall from winter western monsoon in Coromandel coast v Tropical rainforests on west coast whereas wet deciduous forests on east coast. vi Wider continental shelf on west coast whereas it is shorter land on east coast. vii More presence of natural harbours on east coast. Despite their geographical differences, both support biodiversity and are affected by mining, deforestation and climate change.
