Why has India become increasingly import-dependent for edible oils despite being a major agricultural economy?

India requires 32 million tonnes of oil annually, out of which it imports 14 million tonnes, which shows the massive dependence on imports. Reason behind this import-dependency: (1) Low agricultural output of oilseeds. India grows lowYields of oilseeds. (2) Farmers list adding to future oilseed due to MSP prevalent of wheat and rice. (3) Sector Poor quality of oil seeds. Example: 4 lakh in mustard is descending. (4) Stagnating dispense of former oilfield oil Palms to a ceasing crops.

5Lack of awareness among farmers and its penetration of agricultural extension series leading mono cropping pattern. Steps taken to harden the utilization: (1) National Mission on Oilseeds pursuing farmers to grow oilseeds. (2) PM-AGSMA scheme to promote pulses and oilseed. (3) National Mission on Oilseed-palm oils growing palm oil seeds in NE Region and Andaman Islands. (4) PM-11: 4M Mustard : it will increase in yield by 30%. (5) Providing assistance to farmers to aware them about best farming practice. PM Nadi has urged people to reduce the uptake of oil in their diet, depicting the requirement to achieve self-sufficiency.
