Rural and unbanked populations suffer from formal credit mechanisms absence and thus, tenders their role in inclusive growth of India. Primary causes of limited formal credit penetration: a Digital Illiteracy 1. Absence of bank branches and banking habits 2. Lack of accessibility and connectivity 3. Digital divide on regional basis Internet Connectivity: Urban - 67% Rural - 37% 4. Lack of institutional support by government 5. Limited avenues of credit creation & bankable assets.

Small Finance Banks were envisaged SFBs to fill this banking gap and provide access to hitherto unbanked population. Effectiveness of SFBs: 1. Priority Sector lending targets towards tribal enterprises, women-led initiatives 2. Inclusion of rural, unbanked population in formal sector 3. Incremental credit growth through MUDRA Loans 4. Support to Self-Help Groups and local initiatives c Godan model of Chattisgarh's women making umbrellas. 5. Continuous data collection and monitoring 6. Inculcating banking habits, deposit demand terms deposits, savings among the population. Achieving the aim of inclusive growth: 1. Poverty reduction 2. Development of formal sectors & informalization of workforce. 3. Support to marginalised groups Limitations of SFBs: 1. Lending PSL targets - unmet credit disbursement targets. 2. Non recovery of loans - Bad Loans. 3. Dependence on formal, larger banks for skilled manpower. 4. Inefficient technology adoption. 5. Rigid attitude towards risk-taking ventures.

Way forward: 1. Streamlining of norms ahead 2. Policy support by RBI & government 3. Raising awareness Hence, SFBs can play a vital role in formalization of credit penetrations and SDG goal - 10 inequalities.
