Question 4ExplainGS3GS3
What do you understand by Nature-based Solutions (NBSs)? Explain how NBS can help in adaptation with regard to various hazards.
Main Body
Nature-based Solutions NBS is an umbrella term that aims to protect, sustainably manage & rely on natural or modified ecosystems to meet several societal needs while building long-term environmental & economic resilience. eg: green roofs, rain gardens, etc. NBS use of work nature as follows:[Diagram showing: Conservation, Protection, Restoration, Sustainable use, Management]Solution offered approachto address social, economic & environmental challenges.respects biodiversity, helps increase disaster riskreduction, aids in improving our health & is vital for the climate. NBS can help in adapting in the following hazards: 1) Drought:Building infrastructure which helps in retaining rain water, storage of cultivation can help us tackle the water stress issue faced in all metropolitan cities.
2Urban Flood: Building green-blue infrastructure to bring drainage and channels, using water permeable as part of designing according to the need of the area considered, makes prevailing there of urban floods will help relevant, here prevalent, there of urban floods will help relevant 3) Mangroves Restoration: They play an important role in protecting the coastlines from cyclones & tides, and underwater habitats. Their involvement in restoration of mangroves can benefit the community in numerous ways. 4) Wetland Restoration: Urban wetland as a water purifier, help protect the groundwater level & act as carbon sinks, delete the river. These their restoration is of crucial importance eg: Bellanur, Ulsur lake in Bangalore. Thane creek. 5) Agroforestry: Will make better use of moisture & soil of other resources of the area & compensate for crop failures by livestock loss due to drought. eg: raised farming.
6Planting cover crop: To protect soil during rainy season, reduce soil losses on & enhance nutrient cycling. 7) Implementing controlled burn & other forest management Techniques to reduce the risk of catastrophic wildfire. 8) Maintaining natural flood plains to absorb & slow floodwaters, reduce the impact of flooding events. 9) Living shorelines: → Using natural materials like plants & oyster seeds to stabilize shoreline by present erosion. → Given the importance of nature based solution in various aspects such as disaster risk mitigation, restoration of ecosystem, NBS government of India has taken certain steps in the direction: eg: MISH TI programme, Ramsar convention ratifications, Cities 4 Forests, AMRUT titles.
