Act Far East policy was launched to boost India's engagement with Russia's Far East region. India announced a 1 billion line of credit to develop the region. Significance of Far East Region: (1) Geo-strategic significance Geographically it gives access to rail routes, pacific routes, energy transit routes.

(3) Connectivity enhancement Chennai - Vladivostok maritime route for export of oil, minerals, etc. (4) Boost Indian initiatives like Far East Initiative, SAGAR project, blue economy etc. (5) Strengthen relations with eastern economic Russia - BRICS engaged as key area for future cooperation with aim to reach $30 billion by 2030. Impediments to India's interest in Far East: (1) Chinese competition Overwhelming presence in South China growing engagement with Russia.

(3) Other players South Korea has invested heavily in ship building, manufacturing, electrical equipments etc. Japan seeks to depend on Russian oil & gas resources after 2011 meltdown. It sees Russia as growing agrotechnology. India must explore possibility of investing in infrastructure projects for having cheaper port like project even in far east to unleash true economic potential.
