India has contributed one of the largest troops to the UN peacekeeping efforts. UN peacekeeping involves deploying of forces at disputed area to maintain peace. India's contributing to keeping: (1) Largest troop deployment - over 2,00,000 Indians have served in peacekeeping. (2) All women contingent sent to Liberia in 2007. Further, all women contingent sent to S.Sudan (Dafur region). (3) Chain of 4 international commissions for supervision & control of IndoAsia missions. (4) Practice of Yoga to UN missions. Peacekeepers have taken the practice of yoga to peacekeeping mission. (5) UN Medals of Honour - have been received by for its dedication & service in peacekeeping. Challenges to peacekeeping: (1) Safety of peace keepers - growing incidence of climate against peacekeepers. (2) Organisational challenges - lack of coordination from host nation, no cooperation from local troops, Proper challenges. (3) Operational challenges - need for advanced newer and upto-date technology. (4) Redundant missions - missions without exit strategy, draining UN resources of UN mission to DRC. Way forward - prudent deployment of peacekeeping missions & establishing trust & coordination is the way forward.
