Main Body

PM2.5 and PM10 are dangerous particulate matter particles, that can penetrate into the lungs and enter the blood stream, causing the and highest number of deaths in urban areas. Causes of PM and Ozone Pollutions 1) Industrial emissions of CO2, sulphur dioxide, particulate matter etc. 2) Vehicular emissions => Sox and NOx emissions. 3) Formation of photospheric ozone pollution under sunlight and reaction of NOx with volatile organic compounds. 4) Refrigerators, AC's, cleaning agents => bromo-floro carbons, HCFC's etc. => ozone pollution.

5Waste burning => toxic compounds including PM2.5. 6) Burning of agricultural residue => crop residue in Northern India => winter pollution in Delhi NCR. Government Steps Taken A) ABI management B) National Action Plan C) Steps taken by GOI D) Signed Protocol & Amended Wigali Protocol Effectiveness of Programmes Positives 1) NEAP has identified PM10 and Co as the metrics => resulted in decline in 56 attainment cities, out of 132. 2) AQI metric and colour-coded categories has increased awareness and consciousness among citizens.

two avenues and continuous assessment among citizens. 3) Delhi's ODD-EVEN scheme and cloud-seeding proposal have temporary additions. 4) Montreal Protocol => 100 percent ratification => HCFC's have been completely phased out by India. => HCFC's => non ODS but 444 => phasing out by 2030, as per Kigali amendment. Limitations 1) Inadequate funds for NEAP secured efficiency => Fund gap of 45 in most cities. 2) Lack of structural reforms like fossil fuel subsidy ban, EV adoption etc. 3) Release of ODS from e-waste, furntures etc. 4) Waste burning => release of PM2.5-8-10. Thus, the need is to ensure stricter implementation, and the cause-overload measures to tackle air pollution.
