What are Small Modular Nuclear Reactors (SMRs)? Why are SMRs considered a safer alternative to conventional Nuclear Power Plants?
Main Body
India envisions to reach 63000 MWs of nuclear energy production by 2082 for which small modular reactors are key. Small Modular Reactors: These are nuclear fission reactors of capacity less than the conventional reactors, which makes them safer, cheaper and more efficient than conventional reactors. Features of SMR: 1) Less land requirement => easy land procurement measures. 2) Reduced consumption of nuclear fuel like uranium => indigenously self-sufficient production, that does not invoke IAEA's limitations.
Conclusion
Thus, SMR's can be the pathway through which India achieve its target of 100MW of nuclear energy by 2030.
