India envisions to reach 63000 MWs of nuclear energy production by 2082 for which small modular reactors are key. Small Modular Reactors: These are nuclear fission reactors of capacity less than the conventional reactors, which makes them safer, cheaper and more efficient than conventional reactors. Features of SMR: 1) Less land requirement => easy land procurement measures. 2) Reduced consumption of nuclear fuel like uranium => indigenously self-sufficient production, that does not invoke IAEA's limitations.

3Safety is crucial because of smaller core, less heat generation and controllable use of nuclear material. 4) Optimised cost of establishing CMR as they can be built with nearly 1/3rd cost of conventional reactors. Safety as compared to Conventional Reactor: CMR | Conventional Reactor Less consumption of nuclear fuel. | More consumption of nuclear fuel. Shut down quickly => calm down loading of reactor in case of leakages. | Takes time to shut down => leakages of nuclear radiation. Thus, SMR's can be the pathway through which India achieve its target of 100MW of nuclear energy by 2030.
