Political parties are the agents of party system, who try to acquire power through constitutional means. Since independence, our party system has undergone various transitions: (1) 1958-64 - One party dominance. (2) 1964-1977 - Split in dominant party, emergency, anti-incumbency => Janate govt. & Total Revolution. (3) 1980-2000 - Coalition govts => bargaining and expressive federalism. (4) 2000-2014 - UPA coalitions 2014+ At present, our party system is full of contradictions and paradoxes:

Therefore, our party system is undergoing transitions, but the sovereignty, integrity and unity of the country needs to be prioritized.
