Main Body

Political parties are the agents of party system, who try to acquire power through constitutional means. Since independence, our party system has undergone various transitions: (1) 1958-64 - One party dominance. (2) 1964-1977 - Split in dominant party, emergency, anti-incumbency => Janate govt. & Total Revolution. (3) 1980-2000 - Coalition govts => bargaining and expressive federalism. (4) 2000-2014 - UPA coalitions 2014+ At present, our party system is full of contradictions and paradoxes:

1Revival of one-party dominance => still dependent on 64 party alliance. (2) Political negotiations and diffusion cases have become fragmented => shifting idea logics due to narrow power hungry outlook. Eg: recent shiv sena split. (3) Ideologically non-coherent opposition. Eg: Left & Right politics in coalition. (4) Despite diversity of regional politics, rapidly emerging North-South political divide. Eg: defeat of BJP in Karnataka elections. (5) Emergence of newer political parties Eg: AAP => national party. Therefore, our party system is undergoing transitions, but the sovereignty, integrity and unity of the country needs to be prioritized.
