Introduction

Vijayanagara Empire was founded by Harihara and Bukka in 1336 at Tungabhadra doab, which emerged to become one of the greatest mosaics of architectural and intellectual advancement.

Features of Vijayanagara Architecture 1) Introduction of "Raya gopurams", tall towers to mark the utility of temples. eg: Krishna Dev Raya installed the Raya Gopuram at Vijay Vithal Swami temple in 1509. 2) Introduction of "Kalyara Mandapas"induced the astural storm for deity, used during marriages, ceremonies, festivals etc. 3) Introduction of secular buildings with romantic symbolization. eg: Lotus Mahalprivate chambers of royal household.
