Article 44 of the Indian Constitution directs the government to strive towards adoption of uniform civil code, which homogenises the applicability of personal laws across religious and ethnic groups. Role of uniform civil code vis-à-vis religious pluralism: A Yes, it limits the universal differences, i) Reduces the diversity of practices, caste and ways of living across religious groups. ii) Externally imposes private law ⟹ led organized in evolution. iii) Leads to cultural homogenisation w.r.t. marriages, adoption etc. iv) Threat to plural societies due to loss of cultural autonomy.
