"I am a Moslem; I am a Hindu; I am a Christian; I am a Jew." Mahatma Gandhi. What did Mahatma Gandhi mean by the above statement? Some philosophers have argued that religion is harmful to the moral life, whereas others have claimed that it is necessary to it. Explain your position on the relationship between religion and morality.

Gandhi's message in above quote is related to the underlying unity and oneness of all religions. It refers to not being religious but means to follow one's religion while respecting others as all are part of a larger whole. Philosophers argument on being religion harmful is because - (1) Communal hatred and lynching leads to social unrest (2) Divisional social norms based on religion impact electoral and makes democracy ineffective (3) leads to conflict and wars (e.g. Israel-Hamas war based on religious & political differences) But there is alternative perspective related to efficacy of religion - (4) Religion is important as binding fabric - Yuval (Nak Harari) or Sapay Religion & morality are closely interlinked, as religion forms basis of morals (e.g. touching eldersleads to fact respect to elderly) (5) Religion discourages destructive morality - (e.g. ahimsa => avoiding destructive weapons) (2) Articulate values which forms morals of an individual. Religion ensure strength in societies values like tolerance, empathy shall form foundation of any religion.
