The Bandup Conference of 1955 brought together developing countries into the NAM. NAM reflects aspirations of India through: (1) Asserting choice in the face of binary proposition - Nehru says it was courageous to stand upto world powers as a nascent nation. (2) Power of unity - Through the confederation, India chose right to self-determination - grouping of like minded entity (3) NAM marked neutrality but of mixed passivity - their Foreign Minister referred to Negotiations with both blocs. iv) Keeping options option - NAT - been tied down to binary rules. v) Preventing neo-colonialism - Bloc membership required forgoing strategic autonomy. Yet, NAM curtailed aspirations of India: i) Economic aid from USA Britain's not forthcoming ii) Politically neutrality was akin to swelling with USSR. iii) Dysfunctional after Nehru's death iv) Did not bring aid during China war (1962) NAM was hailed as a political experiment, reflecting core values of Budhisam Marg and peaceful coexistence.
