The question of gender equality is central to the debate on Uniform Civil Code. In this light what are the challenges in reconciling UCC with gender equality as enshrined in the constitution?

Article 44 places an obligation on the state to strive to secure UCC. UCC is essential to ensure gender equality in the country. Legal Age of marriage for a girl is 18 years and for a boy is 21 years. Present Gender Inequalities: A Muslim girl can marry after puberty (15 years). This Muslim law conflicts with Child Marriage Act. Different religious personal laws mandate different amounts of alimony for a woman being divorced by her husband. (In Muslim law, alimony is put for 3 months, for Hindu, it is for much longer period)

Opposition by different religious groups Status Quoist mindset of people: Minorities view UCC as tyranny of majority. Not accommodating diversity as it leads to resentment. Ministries view UCC as tyranny of majority. Article 25: Right to practice one's own religious beliefs.

There should be enough dialogue and discussion to achieve consensus on UCC to usher in gender equality.
