1Creating awareness - It plays important role of sensitising women of their rights and women specific laws and schemes eg - NCW carries out campaigns & publishes magazine to highlight women specific laws as - Anti Domestic Violence Act, Anti-dowry provisions. 2) Raising women specific issues - It has raised concern of women with legislature including Policy Advocacy as - commission has raised issue of sexual violence at work place.

3Advisory role - provides input in policy formulation as - gave inputs in formulation of POSH Act. 4) Suo-motu actions - commission has proactively taken issues concerning women eg - Raising Nirbhaya incident of Delhi. 5) Seek compensation - commission seek appropriate compensation in case of women victims. 6) Participate in judicial process to ensure justice to women victims - as commission has actively played role in ensuring speedy justice in Bihar shelter case. 7) Umbrella body - NCW act as a supervisory & coordinating body between various women specific bodies operating in different states.

1Political interference or executive influence - it affects its impartial functioning. 2) Delay in taking actions - as in case of Manipur where two women were subjected to inhumane treatment. 3) Lack of autonomy with respect to selecting its own staff. 4) Financial reliance over state weakens its operational efficiency. Certain steps are needed to further strengthen it -> give it a constitutional status - Address Human Resource issue - Financial autonomy (expenditure charged upon Consolidated fund) - Independent investigation machinery
