Nature of polity of Indian state is defined by Article 1 as Union of states. It has further been termed as Quasi-federal by K.C. Wheare which indicate elements of both Unitarianism & confederalism. A happy mix of Unitarianism & confederalism 1) Unitary feature- 1) Integrated nature of judiciary like in UK 2) Certain provision like Article 252, 356 which gives power to unite over state affairs under certain emergencies. 3) Article 248 of constitutes which allows centre to change name area and boundary of state. 4) All India services, provision of GST fixture give a unitary feature 5) Single citizenship, Single flag. 6) More subject in Union list and decline of federal supremacy. 7) Conduct Centre (powers into states)
Conclusion
Thus, we see a mix of unitary and confederalism which has been successful in running world's largest functioning democracy. As Frame CJ Chandichuk has said India polity in conjunction which changes between unitary and federal as per the need of time.
