The unique attributes and strengths of Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) and the government make them complementary to one another in the governance and development process. Comment. Evaluate the need for effective regulation of the NGOs.

Main Body

Non governmental organization - people coming together for a commoncause to meet their ends. NGOs is 3rd important component of governance structure. Unique attributes and strength of NGO: (1) Voluntary organisation (strong social network) (2) Works with democratic principles (one vote - one value) (3) Works in areas of community development and capacity building measures [creating social capital] (4) Assisting government in service delivery as they enjoy cordial relation with community (5) Normative partner and work in area where government reluctant to work. (6) LGBTQ+ rights. (7) Peer controlled and spirit of social service.

NGO - government - complimentary role:- (1) NGOs role as [advocacy] - advocating rights of citizen and their voice at policy making level by stakeholder consultation - (e.g.) Withraput to child rights - NGO was consulted (2) Service delivery - et essential goods and services effectively and efficiently. E.g. during covid - vaccine hesitency NGOs persuaded people to take vaccines (3) Agitator - To prevent injustice and uphold rights of most marginalised section - (e.g.) Navy Foundation & LGBTQ+ rights (4) Watchdog - Brings in fiscal prudence and propriety in government spending for social audit by NGOs (5) Public education and mobiliser role - (e.g.) NGO campaigned in karnataka in 2023 election for informed decision-making. Thus NGOs play complementary role in governance and development process - Collective bargaining ensuring sustainable development - Capacity building - Societal attributes - Service delivery - acE environment - de environment - friendly.
