NATO, a collective defence organization, formed during the heydays of cold war has outlived its utility in a world increasingly ascribing to multipolar ideals. Analyse.
Main Body
NATO's irrelevance due to: 1. Disintegration of USSR and its satellite state (1991). 2. Absence of the 'Red Scare' Communist 3. Most European countries family established in the US-bloc. 4. Emergence of China (not Russia) as a threat to US hegemony. 5. Bad historic reputation (IPAB invasion) 6. Other multilateral arrangements becoming prominent (QUAD, AUKUS). 7. Contradictions within NATO (Turkey buying S400). 8. Emergence of multipolar world order-> bloc politics not relevant anymore. Despite these factors, the presence of an aggressive-expansionist Russia and an important military alliance to secure US's national interests, NATO remains strong and continues to expand to this day.
