Inter state river disputes Act, 1956 was brought to provide a level and institutional mechanism to solve the issues of distribution of water resources of interstate rivers that arises due to redistribution of states in 1952. It provides for the formation of tribunal to adjudicate on the issues of inter-state river disputes and bars the involvement of courts in the matter. Issues with ISUDPACT 1956: (1) That different form courts as tribunals are purely crude up serving judges (2) Tribunals take very long time to give award on laavery dispute (3) Placed is not enforceable as state governments do not accept it.

Due to emergence of several parties, consensus on interstate disputes has became difficult.
