Discuss the processes involved in volcanism. Highlight the major volcanic regions in the world and their associated tectonic settings.

Main Body

Volcanism refers to the process in which intened rocks come out to lava on the surface of the earth.

Major factors leading to the volcanism are:

i) Shifting of the tectonic plates - converging and diverging plates leads to volcanism along major de-tonic region of the world.

ii) Hot plumes - volcanic hotspots are formed when some areas are much warmer and lava flows out of them.

(Eg) Yellowstone National Park USA

iii) Hotspot volcanism - formed when rock mantle plumes rise through the lithosphere. These plumes create chains of volcanoes as the plate moves over them.

(Eg) Hawaiian Islands

iv) Pyroclastic flows - formed when collapse of a volcanic dome or lava column expels hot gas, rock fragments and ash at high speed and with high temperature.

Major volcanic regions and their tectonic settings:

1Pacific Ring of Fire - convergent boundaries - subduction zones between oceanic and continental plates. (Eg) Japan, Philippines, New Zealand, West coast of North and South America, Indonesia
2Mid-ocean ridges - divergent boundaries - plates moving apart creating new oceanic crust. (Eg) Iceland, East Africa Rift Valley
3Intraplate volcanism - hotspots within the plate away from plate boundaries. (Eg) Yellowstone (USA), Hawaii (USA), Galapagos Islands
4Mediterranean belt - located along collision zone between African and Eurasian plates. (Eg) Mount Etna (Sicily), Vesuvius (Italy)
5East African Rift Valley - rift valley with intense volcanic activity due to crustal stretching and thinning. (Eg) Mount Kilimanjaro, Mount Kenya
6Deccan Traps (India) - formed due to massive volcanic eruptions during Cretaceous period. Now dormant but represents significant past volcanism.
7Kamchatka Peninsula (Russia) - part of the subduction zone where Pacific plate subducts beneath Eurasian plate.
