Pre - independence India saw many women movements marked by prominent leaders such as Sarojini Naidu, Kamala Mehta etc.
The women organizations then mobilized women in the following ways:-
i) Social evils such as female infanticide, dowry and sati practice were raised as issues by these organizations
ii) The women educators and widow remarriage was advocated as a progressive step towards equality.
iii) Indian national movements for the freedom of the country were joined by women from various strata of the society.
iv) leaders such as Gandhiji were actively involved in enhancing
the women participation.
v) Women from various regional background and diverse socio-economic strata raised their voices.
Impacts of women organization:
(Eg) Pandita Ramabai became first female graduate.
Contemporary relevance: The women organization are focusing on empowerment - SHGs and reservation - political.
The long rooted history of these organizations has helped in inclusion and equality of women. However current ranking in global gender gap report (124/146) showcase we have a long way to go.
