At present there are 104 million elderly people in our country (nearly 10.6% of the total population). Problems of elderly women: (1) Psychological distress. Ex: Due to menopause. (2) Ignorance by the family members. (3) Lack of financial independence makes them vulnerable. (4) Facing the threats of rapes. (5) Single woman syndrome after husband dies.
6Pension funds disbursal is also low among women. (7) Away from the family, migration due to marriage. Measures to be taken: (1) Financial independence. Ex: Formation of SHGs. (2) Skill-training. Ex: Handicrafts under PMKVY. (3) Involve civil society organization to implement welfare measures. It is expected to once the elderly population by 20% by 2050 (UNFPA). So, the gender disparities should be cleared to reap benefits at silver economy.
