Private Member's Bills (PMBs) seldom become law in India, yet they are an important aspect of parliamentary democracy. Bring out their significance and suggest steps to strengthen the PMB process.

Main Body

India in the Lok Sabha witnessed over 100+ private member bills in Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha each, however only 2 in LS, 14 in RS were passed. In fact not one PMB has been passed since 1970.

Significance of PMBs in India

1Enable deliberative governance, upholding Spirit of Parliament.
2Reflect demands and needs of diverse sections and sections of India, Honour their MPs.

Ex: Bills for women safety.

3Enable accountability of MP from his constituency.
4Promote social reform and direct government direction to pressing different disaster. Ex: Bill for UCC.
5Portray's role of opposition – Holding government accountable in eyes of public by demanding bills.
