Cold war saw:

[Alliances] - America and its allies formed North Atlantic Treaty Organization (1949) to suppress any uprisings of Communist in its member countries. Similarly, USSR saw warsaw Pact for its allies.

[Arms Race] - The use of nuclear weapon by USA in 1940 led to apprehensions in USSR that USA could subjugate others in base of nuclear Atom. Hence USSR in 1949 tested Hydrogen bomb, which was even more powerful. Subsequently many development tools place in missiles to carry bombs which continued till treaties like SALT & START came.

Regional wars

Korean war was 1st in line which was followed by Cuban(HS) missile crisis, vietnam war (1960s) but it never turned hot over all.

The Cold war came to an end with disintegration of user in 1991 and wipe out of communist regimes from all over world.
