Main Body

Arctic & Antarctic region are coldest places on earth & have significant impact on weather pattern & human activities.

Effect of Arctic on weather pattern:

1Arctic Amplification: Arctic is warming twice as fast as lower latitudes => more pronounced effect
2Polar vortex: Expanding towards lower latitude. It disturbs Jet streams & causes extreme weather. eg: Chilling cold in USA, Heat dome in Europe
3Temperate cyclones: It is created due to forms formed by cold air mass coming from Poles => can impact figuredly & intensity of cyclones

due to forms formed by cold air mass coming from Poles => can impact figuredly & intensity of cyclones

4Oceanic circulation: meeting ice sink & drives circulation eg: AMOC = Atlantic meridional Ocean's circulation may get impacted

Effect of Antarctic on weather pattern:

1Atlantic/Antarctic circumcircular current => may get variations in temperature & affect weather pattern.
2Widening of ozone hole may get exacerbated.
3Sea level rise: due to ice melt may cause flooding, cyclones etc
4Permafrost thaw: release greenhouse gases => positive feedback for climate change

Effect of Antarctic on human activity:

1Research & development: Antarctic has many research bases. It may get affected negatively. eg: Bhatti.
2Human-animal conflict: Penguins venturing into human habitat.
3Doomsday glaciers: may raise sea level huge quantity & stop many human activity. Antarctic pole is regulated by Antarctic treaty system, but there is no treaty for Arctic. Global community should create similar treaty for Arctic as well.

Q9: Explain the origin of Indian islands in the Bay of Bengal & the Arabian Sea.

AIslands in Indian ocean have been created due to many significant processes over the years.

Indian Islands:

1Arabian sea: Lakshadweep, mauritius, maldives, reunion
2Bay of Bengal: Andaman & Nicobar is.
