Plate Tectonics is a theory explaining the movement of continents of the globe.
Basic Principles:
1The upper layer of earth's called lithosphere - consisting of continental crust, oceanic crust, and upper part of upper mantle is 100 km thick and less dense.
2It float over the underlying Asthenosphere which is more mobile & plastic
3The movement of Lithosphere causes plate boundary interactions, as well as realignment of continents over time.
Types of plate Boundaries:
1Converging - when two plates are moving towards each other, form convergent boundary.
Ocean-OceanForm volconic chain, and island archipelago Vs Japan, Indonesia, etc
Ocean-continentRise to volcanic mountains. Vs Andes [Pacific Plate e South American Plate]
Continent-continentForm deep rift valley, is intermittent volcanism.
Vs Great Africa Rift Valley
2Transform - when two plate move parallel to each other, not creating any new thing. Causes Earthquake.
Vs Great California Transform Fault plate tectonic, through body inter action cause disaster as well as shape of geography.
3Divergent → when plates move away from each other, form divergent bounding.
2Ocean-Ocean → Ridge volcanism and mid oceanic rift Vs Mid Atlantic Ridge for African & South-African Plate
2Continent-Continent → Form deep rift valley, is intermittent volcanism.
