The Middle Gangetic plains comprise the plain area of Arunachal Pradesh (Upper Assam), Eastern UP and Bihar. It is relatively underdeveloped due to:

(A) Population issue and challenges with demography:

(a) The most densely populated region in India - thus resource scarcity per capita.

(B) Poor human development:

Very low in power indicator and skilling

(C) Historical reasons:

Most oppressive British policies in this region.

(D) Challenges in agriculture and economy:

(a) Very fragmented landholding - farm agriculture is not profitable

(b) Lack of large scale industries - away from ports and raw materials.
