The white revolution that began in the 1960-1970s significantly enhanced the milk production in India and today India is the leading milk producing country in the world.

Yet, the white revolution had a regional success with western India experiencing relatively greater success.

Factors for regional success:

a) Strong cooperative movement - in states like Gujarat & Maharashtra [Anand in Gujarat]

b) Better supply chain management - is already established under

c) Better infrastructure availability - is roads & railway connectivity

d) Presence of Change leaders - is like Ch. Varghese Kurien

e) Efforts of NDDB - is strong regional network of national Dairy Development Board in western India.

g) Presence of decent Butter Breeds - is for both indigenous (Sahiwal, Tharparkar) and Hybrid (Jersey) etc. Thus, the success of cooperative model of western India and Gujarat in particular is the need of the hours to have an "European white revolution" in entire India.
