Question Q.4GS1GS1

Discuss the various factors responsible for the uneven temperature distribution on Earth's surface.

Open scan (p.11)

Main Body

The temperature on the surface of the earth significantly varies from -90°C (Antarctica) to 55°C (West Asia). Yet, the distribution is uneven.

Factors responsible for this:

1Altitude:
As the height increases, temperature declines at the rate of 1°C per 100m (normal lapse rate)
Example: Himalayas in subtropical regions enjoy Tundra region temperature
2Continentality:
Places away from sea have extreme climates
Example: Verkhoyansk, Russia
3Moderation by Ocean winds:
Moderation of temperature extremities near coasts
All coastal areas
4Rainfall:
In equatorial regions make it less hot than tropical regions despite receiving more solar insolation.
5Local factors:
Rise local winds like: Hot/Fohn/Chinook/Zonda/Koo [decrease/disappear], Cold/Higha/Cold wave/Pampa/Blizzard.

Thus, there is uneven distribution of temperature not in exact agreement with latitudinal position and solar insolation of the place.
