The Marathas ruled over the southwestern) part of India prominently and included after a confederacy of sultans like Scindia of Gwalior, Holkar of Indore etc after the loss of importance of the maratha emperer.

Marathas posed a significant challenge to British as:

they had a well trained army and battling technique used inverse clause (eg: Guerilla warfare inspired from Malik Order).

With Treaty of Panipat in 1752, a 20 year peace period ensued during which British continued onslaught the regime from upon Sultan
