Question 4GS1GS1

How does oceanic salinity vary across different regions of the world's oceans, and what factors contribute to these variations?

Open scan (p.12)

Main Body

Oceanic salinity varies across the world depending on latitude and depth of the ocean due to factors like precipitation, ocean currents, etc. Varying ocean identity: Oceans are less saline at the surface and more saline at depths below the Halocline (a transition phase at which salinity increases very rapidly with depth). Higher salinity in middle of oceans: Lower near continent, especially (because) where rivers empty into the sea. Eg: INDIA: Bay of Bengal, Arabian Sea, Indian Ocean towards mainstream - more saline. INDIAN OCEANmore saline.
FACTORS contributing to differential salinity: High insolation at equator: High precipitation at equatorlower salinity at surface. 15 north and south are more saline than at the equator. Ocean currents: Move the salinity and distribute concentrations. Saline northern waters (being south due to cold currents - warm currents have less saline water north/northern hemisphere). Ice melt at polesreduces salinity. Rivers emptying into oceansreduce salinity. Geographical features eg: closed bays/areas enclosed salinity (trapped water) - Salinity of oceans determined by density of water as well as the biological diversity of the region.
