Effect on pollution:

As cold air settles down and mixes with smoke it creates smog. The trapped cold air (due to high density) cannot rise and lead to higher pollution levels. This is evident in Delhi-NCR region in winters, where the cold air gets entrapped due to poor horizontal wind circulation and lighter warmer upper wind circulation. This leads to higher pollution levels than in normal circumstances.

Thus, Delhi government has fought clear Air programme with graded measures as per AQI levels.
