Question 8GS1GS1
In the context of cultural diversity in India, can we consider Southern states as distinct cultural units? Substantiate your view with a comparison to the rest of India?
Main Body
In the grand tapestry of Indian culture with diversity of sub-continental nature we find both differences & similarities in cultures of different parts of India:
[Similarities]
Reference to same religious tenets, same Gods, same festivals, scriptures
Vaishnavism and Shaivite seek worship and follow Bhakti Yoga all over India
Interactions like Tamil-Kashi Sangam, Tamil-Gujarati sangam show proliferation of shared culture
Despite differences in Dravida & Nagara architecture, key principle of deity worship & rituals is same
[Distinct cultural unit: South India]
Classical music (Carnatic music) as different from Hindustani
Various unique classical dances like Bharatanatyam, Kuchipudi in different states of South India
Southern languages belong to Dravida family but other languages belong to Nindo-Aryan group of languages
Sangam literature show parallel development in philosophy & other ideas (eg. Thiruvalluvar)
Several unique style of architecture like Dravida, Vesaha, Hoysala school
Though festivals are some but rituals are different (eg. in Nataraj Sakran)
Thus, in some sense they are distinct cultural unit but broader analysis show only diversity with a common underlying theme of ek Bharat, Shreshtha Bharat.
