Question Q4GS1GS1

Discuss the various factors responsible for the uneven temperature distribution on Earth's surface.

Open scan (p.11)

Main Body

While the Earth's heat budget is balanced, yet there are horizontal and vertical variations in temperature distribution.

Factors responsible:

1Earth's tilt on 23.5° axis
It causes the earth while rotating and revolving to tilt towards the sun. Warm hemisphere tilt during its summer help reach more insolation lowest it with moon, which has neglible tilt since south pole is pierced all year round.
2Latitude
It higher latitude insolation received is less towards the sun (with diagram showing insolation decreasing from equator to poles, marked 0°, 90°, 93°)
3Physiological features
Presence of mountains, deserts, ice-cap, snow mountain create different albedo potential which absorbs subject different
4Slope
Slope / slant surface offer have much sunlight is absorbed (with diagram showing angle of insolation on different slopes)

mere insolation less insolation

5Continentality effect
Presence of ocean and land mass affect the temperature distribution

eg: North Hemisphere has most extreme temperature range

6Presence of winds, currents, distribution

which help to balance the heat distribution and create different temperatures. Eg: cold currents like Peruvian current or near atlantic drift creates warm temperature in Britain

Hence, these factors contribute to uneven distribution & huge variations in biodiversity

Diagram

Diagram showing temperature/insolation variation from equator to poles, with labels indicating equator, poles, horizontal variation, and insolation levels at different latitudes (0°, 90°, 93°)

  • Clear identification of factors
  • Incorporation of diagrams
  • Specific numerical reference (23.5°)
  • Comprehensive coverage of multiple factors
  • Specific examples (Peruvian current, Atlantic drift, Britain)
  • Mentions biodiversity connection
