Main Body
The idea of inter-linking of river was first coined by Sir Arthur Cotton. This is being implemented through the National River Inter-Linking Project (NRILP) to connect 19 Himalayan and 16 Peninsular rivers.

(i) Disaster management or helps in directing excess flood water
(ii) Energy - dam on the project can be used in hydro-electric power
(iii) Irrigation needs - can provide continuous water to SIGOs unirrigated lands
(iv) Drought management - helps provide drinking water and irrigation needs during droughts
