Leader of Opposition is the head of numerically largest opposition party in Parliament or state assemblies. [Statutory Position]: (i) Cabinet Minister rank as per Leader of Opposition Act, 1977. [Central to Functioning of Parliamentary System]: (i) Opposes and controls Government to ensure limited Government & rule of law. Examples: Farm laws, GST hickups. (ii) Ensures Checks & Balances to ensure legislative control on executive authority. Examples: Passes adjournment censure motions. (iii) Promotes Debate on key values & legislative proposals. Examples: Nari Shakti Vandhan Adhiniyam (108th Amendment).

[Role of Leader of Opposition]: (i) Advances Interest of Opposition to counter government agenda & ensure good debates. (ii) Deliberative Democracy: Promoted by strong LoP. Examples: AB Vajpayee.
