Post independence, the integration and development of tribals was a key issue, approached through progressive integration of tribals, at their own pace of development.

Evolution of Tribal Policy
1Isolation Theory => to leave the tribal inhabited areas free from interference, to preserve culture.
2Assimilation Theory => to force the integration of tribals into mainstream, by neglecting culture, and ensuring development.
3Tribal Panchsheel => brain child of Nehru to assure development of tribal areas, without encroachment on cultural uniqueness and forest-based development.
