Explain the origin of Indian islands in the Bay of Bengal and the Arabian Sea.

Introduction

Island refers to a piece of land surrounded by water on all four sides. Indian territory comprises of 612 islands, located in Arabian sea and Bay of Bengal.

Origin of Indian Islands

(i) Bay of Bengal

-> Andaman and Nicobar islands are found off the coast of Eastern India.

-> These islands are volcanic in origin, formed due to tectonic movement of plates.

-> As the Indian plate collided

with Eurasian plate, syntaxial bend developed near Namcha Barwa, led to N-S orientation of Purvanchals.

-> Andaman & Nicobar are considered to be the extension of himalayan orogenisis, geologically matching the Arakan mountains of Myanmar.

-> Barren Island -> only live volcano of India, part of under sea volcanic mountain chain, the upraised part of which forms the Andaman & Nicobar islands.

(ii) Arabian sea Islands

-> Lakshadweep islands, located

480 km off the Malabar coast, comprises of 43 islands, only 11 are inhabited.

2These are coral islands, composed of dead coral deposits, rich in calcium carbonate, known as atolls.
3Atolls surround a shallow lagoon, formed due to subsidence of hills, composed of granitic crust.
4Gradually, the attached fringing & barrier reef are raised above sea level, and they cover the hollow to form coral islands.
