Question 1GS1GS1
Discuss the various factors responsible for the uneven temperature distribution on Earth's surface. (Answer in 150 words) 10 marks
Main Body
Temperature refers to the degree of hotness or coldness of any object.
Factors Responsible for Uneven Temperature Distribution:
1Latitude & Angle of Incidence => Insolation decreases poleward as the angle of incidence increases => More scattering of light & wider area. (energy therefore decreases)
2Seasons => During summers in Northern Hemisphere, tropic of cancer experiences highest temperature. This is a result of the tilt of Earth's axle.
3Altitude => Due to concentration of greenhouse gases => Decreases
4Winds => Responsible for movement & distribution of heat.
5Uneven distribution of land & sea => Due to varying specific heat of land & water. Land behaves as a black body => Heats up faster to cool down faster => More extreme variation.
6Ocean currents => Responsible for cold & warm currents. Eg: Benguela current => Cold current. Norwegian current => Warm current.
7Clouds & Precipitation => Equatorial record less temperature due to presence of thick clouds => Dimming effect.
In conclusion, distribution of temperature is influenced by various factors. Global warming is causing an increase in average temperature.

- Clear enumeration of seven major factors
- Use of specific examples (Benguela current, Norwegian current)
- Incorporation of mechanisms (e.g., black body behavior of land)
- Logical flow from primary factors to secondary effects
- Mention of contemporary issue (global warming)
