Introduction

After the Indian Independence Act, 1947, the integration of 565 princely states became an issue, due to colonial arbitrariness, administrative and socio-cultural issues.

Administrative issues:

1Vagueness of lapse of paramountcy => push to join India, Pakistan or remain independent => No standard procedure for integration of states.
2Lack of consideration to the popular will => most princes demanded to remain independent, but masses wanted amalgamation.

Socio-cultural issues:

1Religious composition of the population => lack of cultural homogeneity.

Eg: J&K => muslim masses but hindu ruler.

2Princely states had evolved their own societal culture => integration created problems of nationalism and forging of unity. Eg: Nagaland- distinct Naga culture
3Demands for linguistic reorganization of states => source of conflict, violence and potential balkanization of the country.

Therefore, the integration of princely states was a multiethnic task, cautiously negotiated by C.V. Patel and V.P. Menon.
