Question 4Answer in 150 wordsGS1GS1
Differentiate the causes of landslides in the Himalayan region and Western Ghats.
Introduction
Landslides refer to the de-stabilisation of slopes, causing the downslope movement of rocks, boulders, trees etc. under the influence of gravity

Main Body
Causes of landslides:
1Himalayan region
Seismic activityHimalayas are geologically activefrequent earthquakes, causing the de-stabilisation of steep slopes, leading to movement of rock fragments.
2Shifting river courses → due to extensive erosion & deposition, leads to saturation of rock masses, causing disorienting of slopes.
Thus, Himalayan landslides are primarily caused by natural factors.
(B) Western Ghats
1Deformation → causes easy loosening of soil → easy movement of debris.
3Extremely heavy rainfall → saturated rock masses become disbalanced → slipping of strata.
4Mining → stripping soil cover, creation of pits, starting of roots → ground displacement → landslide.
The Western Ghats are geologically stable, erosion masses and geologically stable, thus most landslide were result of anthropogenic disturbance.
Therefore, landslides need to be effectively mitigated enough slope stabilisation by afforestation, geo-textiles, boulders, bigyunct efforts on western plateau etc.
