Main Body

Types of soil important for agriculture:

1Alluvial soil → arid/alluvial, shallow soil, extremely fertile, sustaining the largest variety of cultivation → important crops like wheat, sugarcane, maize etc. are vital.
2Black soil → volcanic lava soil with magnetite iron, but poor in nitrogen and organic matter → known as 'regur', extremely important for cotton cultivation.
3Red and Yellow soils → poor in phosphates if nitrogen, but can be cultivated with fertilizer treatment. Eg: cashews, coconuts, dryland crops like millets etc.
4Laterite soil → highly leached soils, found in heavy rainfall areas → used for coffee, tea, cashews, spices and other plantation crops in Western Ghats in N.E.
5Peaty-Marshy soil → high organic content composed of fossil deposits → useful for mangrove forests, sundhi nee - useful for dyeing.
6Desert/Arid soil → saline soil called as 'uara' because it infertile, but with utilization → millets can be cultivated.

Therefore, India has a wide diversity of soils, leading to cultivation of tropical and temperate crops.
