Main Body

Geographical condition responsible for the development of shola forest in western ghats under rolling windward side

Southwest effect:

[W/Shola forest]
1Monsoon Rainfall - geographic rainfall due to windward side southwest effect [diagram showing Monsoon, orographic rain, and Nilgiri]
2Temperature and humidity due to tropical condition optinum moisture and temperature(20-28°C) for growth.
3Suitable built constitution - loamy and permeable → penetrate penetration of roots easily in such soil.
4Solar insulation - adequate always on slopes of mountains due to tropical location.
5optimum condition of [multiherbals] - humid condition which ensures [humus content in] soil.

Ecological significance of shola forest:

1Carbon sequestration - carbon sink for green house gases
2Rainfall regulation due to high amount of [para-phataviopsis]
3Stability of slopes of western ghats - prevent landslide, [salinity]
4enrolment of soil through decomposition of leaves et.
5maintain adequate flows of rivers like [[illegible], [illegible]] defence of water recharge groundwater
6temperature moderation prevent global warming
7source of timber, minor forest produce for local community.
Threatsdeforestation by encroachers smuggles injuring for minerals

Thus, shola forests are life-line of southwestern India. They must be protected for ecological balance.

Diagram

Diagram showing monsoon rainfall pattern on windward side of Nilgiri hills, with arrows indicating southwest effect and orographic rain

  • Good identification of geographical location and distribution
  • Recognizes multiple geographical factors (monsoon, temperature, humidity, soil composition, solar insolation)
  • Comprehensive coverage of ecological significance
  • Mentions specific temperature ranges
  • Identifies threats to shola forests
  • Uses diagram effectively
