Following Ashtanika Marg and middle path. In starting it attracted people due to lack of rituals, pali language, strict denial of caste and women inclusion. However with time, they chose Sanskrit (language and shifted to even tannic cults) (Vajrayana) thus lost ideology for which they started.
However Brahmanism shifted its ideology from actuate to dogmatic one. Bhakti Movement further reformed Brahmanism and reformed Hinduism.
Although there was decline of Buddhism, but with Ambedkar's Neo-Buddhism, it gained further acceptance in Indian Society.
