Open scan (p.38)

Introduction

India recently adopted the GREEN HYDROGEN MISSION - with a target of 50MMT in next 5 years - to secure India's energy requirements.

23 words

Main Body

Potential of Natural Hydrogen as a fuel to meet global energy demands.

1. It is available abundantly.

2. Use of electrolysis to extract hydrogen - by breaking water.

3. Different varieties:

i) Green hydrogen - based on (RE) renewable energy

ii) Grey hydrogen - carbon storage - acid captured

iii) Blue hydrogen - from marine sources.

iv) Black hydrogen - from carbon resources

4. Rapid technology development and deployment (EU).

5. To meet the needs of NDCs - under Paris Climate Deal.

Why it's still an untapped industry:

The electrolyzer is technology not efficient - any 30-40% capacity utilization factory

Hydrogen is inflammable - cannot be used in different sectors easily

3Cannot be stored or transported easily
4Cannot be shipped via railways - change in pressure/temperature - dialogue vessel/hemp - dialogue pressure

The existing pipeline will get corroded - need separate pipeline - costing extensive.

5Lack of private investment in the tech - public led
6Lack of off take agreement - leading to less utility and wastage.

Other reasons why hydrogen is untapped:

1. Lack of awareness

2. Nascent technology

3. Lack of global collaboration -

(I) Comprehensive global collaboration

(II) Offtake agreement - mandating

(III) Incentivizes private investment

(IV) PPP for better risk allocation & management

(V) Increase R&D in electrolyzes technology.

Conclusion: Thus, natural hydrogen can help meet the 3As of energy security - accessibility, affordability and availability if strategically managed.
