The recent times in India report 2022 has highlighted a rise in crimes against women. this trend is closely linked to patriarchal values.

Patriarchal values & Feudalism: This value system is rooted in the superiority of men and subjugation of women in all aspects of life. This trickles into: (2) Physical & sexual abuse: nearly one in three Indian women reported being abused as per NCAB. (3) Dowry Harassment: women who fail to meet dowry expectations are mentally & physically tortured by their in laws. (3) Marital Rape: men do not acknowledge denied autonomy of women and the idea of consent leading to marital rape. (4) Fake Tearing & Molestation law concerns in public places as women objectification is likely normalized

Rape in India: clear is a 160 reported rape case every 16 mins (NCRB) highlighting the disregard for dignity of women.

Modernization in law: (1) Dowry Prohibition Act: legal prohibition against giving and demanding dowry. (2) Prohibition of Domestic Violence Act: deters against domestic abuse of women. (3) POSIT Act: provides safeguards against sexual harassment at the workplace. (4) Banning of Tripu Talaq by Supreme Court.

Persistent issues: (1) Legal loopholes: Instead of dowry people demand "gifts". (2) Lack Justice compliance: irregularities in compliance of many laws and lack of information of internal complaint committee as per POSIT

Persistent issues continued: (5) lack of awareness. (8) Underreporting due to fear/victim shaming. (9) judicial delays in prosecution and ensuring justice.

Way forward: involve women NGOs, SHGs; increase women representation in police; police sensitization through awareness campaigns.
