Sanskrit remains one of the oldest languages, besides Tamil, which has a rich history in literature spanning all genres like fiction, non fiction, science, medicine, lexicography etc. The earliest Sanskrit Literature consists of The Vedas, the Aranyakas, the Upanishads and the Vedangas, Panini Ashtadhyayi. According to historian R.P. Jaiswal Sanskrit Literature found its flourishing in the
Gupta Empire. Poetic works of Kalidasa and his dramas like Meghadutam, Raghuvansa, Abhigyan Shakuntalam, Malavikagnimitram etc. Monis Jones called the poem one of the most sublime and beautiful. Lexicographical works of Patanjali - Mahabhashya, and Amarsimha's Amarkosha. Scientific literature like Aryabhatta's, Brahmagupta's 'Brihat Samhita'. Also Medical Literature like Sushruta's Samhita and Charaka Samhita. Literature works like - Mudra Rakshasa by Vishakhdutta, work of
Dandin, Vatsyayan's Kama sutras and Sudrakas's Mrichkatika. It was also a time of commentaries on Dharmashastras like Bodhayan's Sutras etc. Historians like Romila Thapar have contended that Sanskrit was an elite language and the benefit of it in Gupta Age was confined to the elite section.
Conclusion
But, it cannot be denied the Gupta Age was indeed a 'classical period' in Indian history and history of Sanskrit Literature.
